Science at Evelyn CP School

Intent

At Evelyn, we firmly believe that Science is an indispensable part of a complete education. A high quality Science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

We understand that Science is vital to the future prosperity of the world. This in turn leads us to ensure that all children are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of Science that will fully equip our children in the future. Science at Evelyn focusses upon developing students' thinking and scientific practices that enable them to make sense of the world in which they live. We achieve this by ensuring that students are exposed to quality first teaching, investigating scientific phenomena and real-world problems and by applying scientific skills.

Children are encouraged to make rational explanations, to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena, to explain what is occurring and to predict how things will behave. It will develop the natural curiosity of the children, encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment and provide opportunities for critical evaluation of evidence.

Implementation

In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in Science, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout our school, including our upcoming designated Science lab.

  • A clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum where teaching and learning should show progression across all key stages within the strands of Science.
  • Children explore, question, predict, plan, carry out investigations and observations as well as conclude their findings.
  • Children present their findings and learning using science specific language, observations and diagrams.
  • Using cross curricular links and opportunities to ensure pupils can transfer and apply the skills they develop.
  • Build on our children’s natural curiosity and developing a scientific approach to problems.
  • Ongoing formative assessment for learning by the teaching staff, use of diagnostic and end of term assessments to assess working scientifically skills. KS2 also test for specific taught knowledge two thirds of the way through a topic in time for misconceptions to be addressed.

Impact

The teaching of Science at Evelyn ensures that all children have the opportunity to develop their scientific knowledge and understanding through learning experiences featuring awe and wonder.

Children at Evelyn have high aspirations which, in line with our Student Exit Profile, provide a wider understanding of the world as they journey on to higher education and beyond. At Evelyn we promote a positive learning journey by building strong, positive relationships with students to create an engaging and magical learning atmosphere for all.

Through ongoing assessment, continuing book scrutiny, engaging displays, pupil and staff interviews plus science planning to promote curiosity, Evelyn ensures to provide high quality teaching of science throughout all year groups. Our children can then achieve their scientific aspirations and careers by building on the foundations that began with us.
