PE at Evelyn CP School

Intent

At Evelyn, we endeavour to develop an engaging, high-quality and diverse PE curriculum that encourages and inspires our children to make sport and physical activity a part of their lives. We will give our children experiences in a broad range of sports and disciplines and promote progression in skills through fun and enjoyable lessons. We want our children to be physically confident and understand the benefits that leading a healthy lifestyle brings. We want our children to show resilience and perseverance in times of difficulty with a positive approach to problem-solving. Children will be encouraged to cooperate and collaborate during lessons and teamwork skills will be held in high esteem. Respect is our school rule and children will show fairness and kindness when participating in sport, both in lessons and competitive events. PE is an area of the curriculum that is enjoyed and appreciated by all.

Implementation

At Evelyn -

  • We provide challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, ball games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming and outdoor adventurous activities.
  • We have a long-term plan that sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. This leads to a progression in skills and ensures a broad coverage for maximum enjoyment.
  • Pupils cover a different sporting discipline every half-term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in a varied range of extracurricular activities.
  • Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.
  • Each year a group of Year 5 and 6 children are invited to become Sports Crew for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunchtime clubs, our annual Sports day and any other sporting activities.
  • Children may participate in workshops covering a variety of sports throughout the year. For example, archery, cricket and judo, again providing the children with an opportunity to develop, improve their fitness and try something new.
  • Children in Year 6 swim for an hour a day over the course of two weeks – 10 hours in total. They are assessed at the end of their swimming lessons with appropriate signposting for extra lessons and swimming clubs for relevant children.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, all children will be confident in their own physical ability and demonstrate key skills in a range of disciplines. Children will be confident in their knowledge of healthy lifestyles and understand how physical activity and exercise play a key part in maintaining this. Children leaving Year 6 will be able to explain how to stay safe near water as well as be able to perform a self-rescue as part of their swimming lessons. The impact of this curriculum design will lead to outstanding progress in their performance, competition and social and mental development and lead to all children leaving at the expected level in PE.
