The Spooky Forest by Matthew, Year 5
The hot flaming sun shone down on Alex. All around him, the leaves of the forest were as orange as lava. Just for a moment Alex thought that the crooked, brown branches were reaching out to him. He blinked. Suddenly they were all back to normal.
Alex slouched his shoulder and scraped his feet along the path. He was sad and lonely. As he was walking, he picked up a stone and launched it at a tree. When it landed, he realised it was gleaming.
Fearfully, he edged forward to the stone. He grabbed it. It was hot at first and then it went cold – colder than ice. In a blink of an eye he was transported to the middle ages. He felt nauseous and dizzy. He was in a broken, crooked street. The stench drifted up his nose, reminding Alex of mouldy cheese. He nearly fainted. Alex was so distracted by the pungent odour that he didn’t see the carriage charging towards him.
“Careful mate”, a voice commended forcefully, as the civilian yanked Alex out of the way. Immediately, Alex squinted and stared at the figure. He looked just like Alex’s dad.
“What are you looking at?” demanded the man.
“You remind me of my dad”, replied Alex.
The man walked Alex back to his house. Alex soon discovered his name was John Smith and it was his great great great grandfather. Can you imagine how freaked out Alex felt? He put his hand in his pocket and found the pebble was not there. Alex was panicking because he knew the pebble was not there and he needed it to get home. Without delay, Alex scurried back to the lane. As he arrived the pebble was gleaming – he touched it and he was gone.
As soon as he got home, he hid it in his secret box. Alex had already decided he was going time travelling again.

Nightmare In the Woods by Alex, Year 5
In the dark, lonely forest the freezing moon was the only torch. Silently, the ghostly trees swayed; the gnarled branches had a haunting fight.
In the tallest tree sat a man peering through his binoculars. His name was Jim and he was a lonely explorer. At that moment, Jim heard an animal squeaking. But no matter what he did he could not find the animal that was making the noise.
Feeling a bit spooked, Jim went to collect a lamp from the tent. When he crept out of the tent – the forest was burning…
Carefully, Jim edged towards the fire. He noticed that he couldn’t feel the fire. Was it real? It looked real, but it didn’t feel real. He was so close, he could almost touch it. Suddenly, the fire flashed around him. Then, he could hear an eerie rhyme. The voice sounded like a little girl. Within a second, the fire was gone and the forest was back to normal.
Because he didn’t know what had happened, his heart beat like a galloping horse. After that, he staggered back to his tent to try and get some sleep. As Jim tossed and turned he realised that there was a strange book lying on top of his other books. How did it get there?
Jim gazed at the book. It was an old dusty book. When Jim wiped the dust he found…a name. Carefully he opened the book. Inside it he looked at the words and realised it was a diary. Suddenly the words disappeared and a girl’s face appeared on the page.
“Destroy it” whispered the girl. Without thinking he made a fire by rubbing the sticks together. Bravely, Jim ripped it up and threw it in the fire. Slowly, the fire spread out and the girl’s voice whispered “thank you”. That was the last time he heard her voice.
A week later Jim had packed up his tent and was about to return home but an old lady stopped him. “Did you go in the wood?” she wailed. “Do you know a little girl died 10 years ago in these woods?”
The old lady told Jim about the girl and how she was her teacher. Also she told Jim that she was a strange little girl. She was always making up stories about the future. “She kept all her secrets about the future in her diary”, she told him. Suddenly Jim realised that she never wanted anyone to know about the future.

The Mysterious Wood by Owen, Year 5
Even though the shining sun had only just risen, it blazed like fire though the grand trees. All around, the crispy leaves were like a rainbow standing proud across the forest.
At that moment, a black Hummer drove quickly into the forest. A young boy called bob stomped out of the car in an unpleasant way. “Come on Bob, let’s put up the tents” sighed his father. Just as they were putting up the tent Bob saw something glowing. There was something that pulled him over there.
Lying on a pool of squashy mud lay an unattended silver tag. He picked up the tag and scanned it. On it, it said ‘bear tracking device’. Silently, he turned to show his dad – but dad had vanished! Suddenly he heard a roar. Behind him was a huge hairy bear. It has enormous yellow teeth and gigantic feet. Also its fur was muddy and old and in it were sticks and stones. It started to come closer. Bob ran as fast as a leopard. His heart beat like a ball bouncing against the wall of his chest. He was so frightened, he forgot to breathe. Within moments he was so exhausted he had to sit down, even though the bear was on his tail.
Just at that moment, he spotted a pounding river. It sprinted faster than the fastest man on earth. Finally he stumbled to the river and leapt in. The river tugged at him and he was dragged away. He struggled because we couldn’t swim. “Bob, I’m here”, he cried. Steadily Dad reached out with a gigantic stick and tried to pull Bob out. Because his hands were wet he could not grab the stick. He tried and tried but just as he gave up all his hopes, he felt the tip of the stick with his finger tips. He pounced to grab the stick and held it and Dad tugged him to the docks.
Dad passed Bob a towel and Dad said, “ Let’s go home Bob”. Bob felt shattered and relieved. He was shivering violently. As Bob was getting in the car he said, “I will not wander off again!”
